Hi, all! With all the increased activity around here, I figured that this might be a good place to have a post I have actually intended from the beginning to be an introductory thing.

I almost always welcome comments here, unless they are disrespectful to me or to someone else. This does not mean you can't disagree, or that you have to be formal all the damn time, or that you can't swear. It does mean that I expect folks on my journal to assume that we're all humans trying to human with good intentions--assume that ouch moments aren't malicious--and to react to ouch! moments by pausing and checking in with each other.

Please talk to me! I like attention.

Behind the cuts: some useful Qs and As.

Who are you?

I am a biologist by trade; at the moment I am trying to finish my PhD as quickly as possible with an eye to staying in academia. I will probably be primarily putting my biology posts on [community profile] tweetingmouse, which is my compromise on merging my professional name with this one to the extent I've done so. ([twitter.com profile] tweetingmouse is also my Twitter handle.) I don't make a secret of what my professional name is, but I like for 'sciatrix' not to pop up when people go hunting for it. I do promise to link to those biology posts when they come up; people seem to like them. My research interests tend to revolve around how individuals adapt to context, social behavior, and sexual selection. There will definitely, absolutely be biology leaking out into here, and fannish biology will go here.

I am queer. Specifically, I'm asexual and have been active in ace communities for going on fifteen years now. (I am 28, so that is a good long time in the course of my life.) I'm generally interested in sexuality, history, and how people interact with both of those things.

I am fannish but a little shy about it! I've been in fandom since 2003, but largely as a lurker. I've been branching out into writing a little bit, especially in Guardians of the Galaxy and Daredevil, but I am often intellectually exhausted by work so I write very, very slowly. I am way more comfortable producing meta, which I tend to produce like breathing. I am trying to talk to people more here, but I've been admiring many people on DW since 2010. It's hard not being shy!

What kinds of things do you like to talk about?

I talk about a lot of things. I tend to talk more if there are other people talking I can bounce off of, which is why there's a bunch of links here to ongoing conversations. Here's a sample of conversations I've enjoyed having and longerform discussions with me, if you are interested.

On allyship and men.

On the history of the asexual flag.

On my largest peeve about Ant Man. (Probably not for the reasons you think.)

On evangelicals actually putting their money with their mouths on morality.

On the meta I could find about good f/f porn.

On orchids blooming underground.

On parasitism in nature and science fiction, and whether or not we should talk about pregnancy. (Of course we should.)

On the loss of spikes in the (human) penis.

On the time I got very angry about an MRA who did not understand mammoths as well as he thought.

What's your access policy?

I often lock pieces that either make me feel vulnerable or that I wouldn't feel comfortable if someone who knows me elsewhere came across and found. I am experimenting with being casually open about my namespace, including doing things like mentioning my (highly identifiable) study system here; however, I'm more likely to lock specific things about my workplace or career than I am to lock pieces of my personal or fannish life.

If you want to see things I lock, there are a few ways to go about doing that. I will generally grant access to anyone who has some kind of profile on DW [e.g. at least one post made in the last couple of months] and grants access for me first. I tend to grant access to mutual subscribers I've been in a few chats with, too, especially if I have recently written something under lock I think they will find interesting. And you are welcome to comment here and ask: introduce yourself, say, and just let me know why you're asking.

I have no idea how filters work at the time of this writing (Jan '19), but if I ever figure them out, I will put that policy here.

Other places you can find me:

The AO3: grison
Tumblr (while it's up): grison-in-space, grison-in-labs
Metafilter: sciatrix. If you are not a Metafilter member, you may not be able to see my profile. Here's a list of all the different conversations over there that I've started. I am probably most active on metafilter right now, but things go very much back and forth with me.

My linking policy:

Anything that is public can be linked anywhere you like. I do request that if you think a lot of people will read it in response, like if you are linking to a large newsletter or a public forum, that you give me a heads up somewhere in the comments.

If you like what I do, I have a Ko-Fi.
