That really sucks. It's especially hard when you have to jump through all the hoops to soothe the defensiveness before you can have a conversation, even though you know you don't mean that and it takes so long to soothe that "ow! fuck you!" feeling and ugh can't you just telepathically intuit I didn't mean that but--" and it would be nice to just be able to start connecting and talking on all the shared ground the person having the conversation is clearly talking about.
(I am uncomfortably reminded of jumping down poor cbrachyrhyncos' throat the other day.)
Like, it just muddies the water and makes it so much harder for people to connect with one another, as you say, because not only are people reacting to the possible predators churning up the silt of the river... they're also reacting to the silt itself and the moving things that might be fishers but might equally just be other fish.
