I know right?!? It seems like such an obvious solution, and yet people use it so infrequently! I feel like part of the problem is that people who are concerned about diversity sometimes worry about not representing ALL DIVERSITY ALL AT ONCE, and like... nah, that's not actually possible. I think this technique is a really effective one that I wish more creators would try using, especially because by comparison you can then also compare the number of straight white men you have in the cast as a similar "group" (in this case, Jake + Charles, ignoring Hitchcock and Scully for a minute) and make sure you are actually showing parity. And obviously this also gives you a lot of space to play with intersectionality, too.
