sciatrixSunday night, my house flooded. I found out when I stepped out of bed and into a squishy pile of liquid, which we initially assumed was probably cat pee and turned out to be runoff from the flash flood Austin got towards the east side this week. Thank fuck for flood insurance.
Of course, the floor disproportionately hit the laminate-floored bedrooms, not the nice tile-floored front of the house, so the floors were destroyed. Nothing else was except for a couple of books, which is impressive--my laptop lives on the floor! I have no idea how it stayed dry!--so we came out of it a lot better than we might have done. But it's still exhausting, and the floors in all four rooms are completely ruined, so I'm still less than thrilled.
I mean, this happened when my spouse Coffee was studying for an exam this morning, and both roommates M and K do retail shift work, so I was pretty much the only person who could handle the insurance folks and the dry force guy and the endless round robin of whether or not flood insurance covers getting burly men with movers to take your shit and put it in a storage box so that you can fix the damn floors. (It turns out that the answer is "Yes, but only the labor bits, and only if you call it content manipulation." We're on the hook for the storage unit happily sitting in our front yard, but I'm all right with that.)
It is surprisingly hard to fight my way back into motivation to do my research when I also have all this going on in the background and am more or less on my own to handle it. Augh.
On the upside, I saw Ocean's 8 last night, and holy fucking shit the UST between Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett about made my night. The whole cast did a kickass job, and everything was terribly pretty, and I was very invested in all of them.
And if Deb/Lou isn't the Next Big Femslash Thing, I'll eat my hat. Holy shit. Holy shit. I have some more thoughts about beauty as camouflage and the lovely way that the movie toyed with that, but they'll have to sit until I transcribe my notes.
