I hadn't thought of the Usenet comparison, but I can see it -- you have one account, and you can go around to all these different groups that are moderated (or not) on different topics, and make your own, and (LOL where was that sentence going) -- and the rules of one group don't apply to any other, and you can get banned from one but still talk in others. I have to say I think from what I've seen accessibility is not being taken into account? Like, I see a lot of emphasis on how it's freeware and a server is only $10 so you can start one up with your friends, but that does rely on enough bandwidth and reliable hardware and the time to do it and the time to do it unpaid and so on. And that's like your point re ISPs. There might be other accessibility issues we can't see yet, and I'd like to know that someone might be investigating what those are, if this is supposed to be where All Of Fandom is going to go.
